Guidelines for IT Consumers
What you need to know BEFORE buying a computer or hiring an IT professional to support your computer systems. (so you don't get burned).
1. What exactly are you buying? You get what you pay for (but you don't want to be taken advantage of either). An easy way to reduce the cost of the system is to use cheap parts. These typically don't last as long, are tougher to replace and cause more compatibility issues with the operating system. Another easy way is to use parts with lower specifications - for example put in slower and/or smaller hard drives, slower and/or less memory. 2. What is the warranty? Not just how long, but what does it cover and how is it covered? If your monitor goes down do they loan you one till the other is repaired? If the hard drive crashes do they reinstall all the software for you or leave you with a blank hard drive? 3. What type of support is available? What is free and what is billable? 4. What are realistic service expectations? Same day? Next? And how quickly are phone calls returned? 5. Can the technicians speak in a language you can understand? Or do a) you know more than they do or b) do they appear to have been born on another planet (universe?) 6. How willing are the technicians to speak with you? 7. Are the technicians that are servicing you constantly upgrading their skills? 8. Are the technicians insured so if they have an accident on your site you don't get sued? 9. How do they bill for service calls? Do they have a fair billing policy? 10. How do they ensure quality of service? 11. How are defective products handled? Do you have to deal directly with the manufacturer (who may be in the U.S. or in the Pacific RIM?)
